I took in this handsome American bulldog mix. He is heartworm positive and very fearful. He is about 3 years old. I am going to be fostering him during his treatment. When I received him he was very scared and had a lot of anxiety. I have had him for about 3 weeks now and wanted to give you Pawtastic fans some insight on the amazing work we are doing.
We started his heartworm treatment very soon after we got him. We are starting with the slow kill method and steroids. One of the challenges with such a young dog being infected with heartworms is keeping him calm. The reason you have to keep a heartworm positive dog calm is that during activity the worms can damage the organs it is infecting. I have been keeping a close eye on his body language. When he starts showing tells he is going to be anxious I will call him over and give him some petting and attention to keep him happy and occupied.
With boss’s anxiety and fearfulness, we are trying to not increase his stress levels and take it slow with him. I do not push him over his threshold. With Boss I can only assume he had a tough life before he was fostered. His head has a handful of scars and runs from anything he is unsure about. He is a great dog and super sweet. I just want him to be comfortable in his own skin and be the happy dog he was ment to be. Keep checking back for updates on Boss, how he is adjusting and giving heartworms the knock out punch!
